Model comparison

HEXACO vs Big Five

Both models describe personality as a set of continuous traits. The main difference is not simply that HEXACO adds a sixth letter. HEXACO also reorganises parts of Agreeableness and Emotionality, creating a different map of interpersonal behaviour.

The short answer

Big Five

Measures Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. It is widely used and supported by a large research literature.

HEXACO

Measures Honesty-Humility, Emotionality, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Openness. Each domain contains four narrower facets.

HEXACO is especially useful when the question involves sincerity, fairness, status seeking, manipulation, greed avoidance, or modesty. Those tendencies are concentrated in its Honesty-Humility dimension rather than being distributed across other traits.

What Honesty-Humility measures

Honesty-Humility contains four facets: Sincerity, Fairness, Greed Avoidance, and Modesty. A higher score generally describes less willingness to manipulate others for personal gain, less attraction to conspicuous status, and a more modest self-presentation. A lower score is not a diagnosis or moral verdict; it can indicate greater comfort with strategic persuasion, status competition, or material reward.

Important: personality scores are relative tendencies, not fixed types. Context, incentives, culture, and learned behaviour still matter.

The other traits do not map one-to-one

It is tempting to treat HEXACO as the Big Five plus one extra factor. That misses two structural changes:

This means a Big Five result cannot be converted mechanically into a HEXACO result. The constructs overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

Neither model produces a clinical diagnosis. The useful question is which structure gives you the distinctions needed for the decision you are making.
